North east vision

Transforming health in the north east

The north east's first ever vision for health and wellbeing - Better Health, Fairer Health - was launched in 2008. This ambitious plan aimed to transform the region into the healthiest in England within a generation.

Bid to turn around the region's health

Fomer minister for the region Nick Brown launched the north east's first ever vision for health and wellbeing - Better Health, Fairer Health - in 2008.

The ten key themes in the 25-year plan are:

  • economy, culture and environment
  • mental health, happiness and wellbeing
  • tobacco
  • obesity, diet and physical activity
  • alcohol
  • prevention, fair and early treatment
  • early life
  • mature and working life
  • later life
  • a good death

Advisory groups

Advisory groups were set up across the public, private, voluntary and community sectors to take work forward in all ten areas.

They are supported by a ‘virtual’ regional public health centre of research excellence which is one of five nationally – and the only one based on a substantial regional collaboration.

Work is going on to make sure the progress already made by the goups is maintained as we move towards the new system for the delivery of public health proposed by the coalition government.
